When you shop for conventional beef, poultry, and eggs at the grocery store, the animals that produced that food were likely fed grain. Typically, corn and soybeans (which are plentiful, easy-to-grow crops) are fed to animals raised for meat and eggs. However, there is a move back to the old-fashioned way of raising farm animals, which is to let them graze on pasture.

Pastured and/or grass-fed animals are, obviously, raised on a diet that is different than their grain-eating counterparts. If you find grass-fed or pastured meat and eggs in your store, it’s likely more expensive, too.

  • Why?
  • Are there advantages to this way of raising meat- and egg-producing animals?

Here are some things to consider about the advantages of grass-fed and pastured foods:

Food Safety

Studies in the late 90s showed a much lower count of E. coli bacteria in grass-fed beef than in grain-fed. Research also indicates that even the E. coli that is found in grass-fed beef is much more likely to succumb to the beef-eater’s stomach acid, and therefore not pose a health threat.

Nutritive Value

Multiple sources point to grass-fed meat’s nutritional superiority, particularly with regard to healthy fats. If you’ve ever seen the yolks of pastured chickens’ eggs, you can see a definite color difference and taste it, too.

Grass-fed beef and poultry also taste different. That’s because it is different! Concerns about the saturated fat found in beef may well be offset by the healthy benefits of the Omega-3’s, Omega-6’s, and CLAs in grass-fed meats.

Grass-fed meats are generally leaner anyhow. Animals that are fed grains are being fattened for market quickly, and that fat, of course, gets passed on to the consumer.

Environmental Advantages

It’s been said that the only sustainable way to grow animals for food is to pasture them. The reasons for this are various, but the most obvious one is that pasturing animals makes good use of the land. Grain-fed animals are generally kept in feed lots, and the crowded conditions make for problems with managing the animals’ waste, and storm run-off from feed lots may be contaminated with this waste.

Also, in order to feed grain-fed animals on feed lots, an enormous amount of land must be dedicated to one or two basic crops that the animals eat. By contrast, pasture-feeding animals encourages biodiversity of plants which is said to be much better for the surrounding ecosystems.

Animal Welfare

Let’s face it – animals just seem happier when they are allowed to range over pasture land. Disease is less common when animals are not crowded together on feed lots, and animals are generally treated more humanely in pasture situations.

Juicing can offer your body benefits that you can both see and feel. Use the tips you will find below to start enjoying some of these benefits. Use the lessons you learned from juicing and see how your body and mind can improve.

TIP! Add a little cucumber to dark leafy greens for improved flavor. Some leafy greens do not taste good.

If you are going to make your own apple juice, be sure to pick out the ripest and sweetest apples possible. If you are going to use bruised apples, cut out the bad parts. Certain types of apples, such as those that are sweeter in taste, tend to make the richest, most flavorful juices. These apples include Gala, Fuji, Red Delicious, and Rome apples.

TIP! If you are juicing your own apples, choose the ripest, sweetest ones you can find. You can use bruised apples, just make sure you cut around the bruised areas.

If your kids do not like vegetables or their tastes, consider juicing them. Only few children enjoy eating vegetables. You can give them their favorite fruit juices spiked with vegetable juice. They don’t need to know what you are doing.

TIP! Think of your juice as one complete meal. After you get used to juicing, you will begin to understand what you need to include in the juice to make it substantial and nutritious.

Lemon Juice

TIP! Make sure to thoroughly clean your juicer as soon as you finish. You are likely to notice the ability of some types of juice to cause staining on parts of your juicing equipment.

Many people want to stockpile juice in the refrigerator, but be sure you guard against pigment changes. A juice that started off bright orange, but now appears a dull gray simply isn’t appetizing. One thing that can help prolong the juice is to put some fresh lemon juice in the mixture. The lemon juice will help the juice retain its bright color, and it will not significantly alter the flavor.

TIP! Be sure your juicer is out, handy, and ready to use all the time. This makes you more aware of it, which guarantees that you will be motivated to use it more frequently.

Cranberries can help with bladder problems or urinary tract infections. Use them as soon as you feel problems coming on.

TIP! Prior to making your juice, research the fruits and veggies that you are going to use. You have to know that every produce item contains different vitamins and nutrients.

Juice only vegetables if you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes until you can speak to a medical professional about his recommendations. Eating fruit can increase your glucose levels quickly. It’s vital that you determine the amount of fruit that you’re juicing for your mixes in order to allow for medical needs. Veggies can give you nutrients without undue risk.

TIP! A coffee filter works well in removing pulp that you might not be able to keep out of your juice. Some people do not like having pulp in their juice, and you may be one of them.

Ginger is known to help with any stomach upsets. Just add a slight amount to any juice, and it will increase the flavor and your health at the same time. It also has anti-inflammatory effects, helping to reduce swelling in your throat due to acid reflux or in your stomach as a result of ulcers.

TIP! Juicing ahead of time to store in the refrigerator is always convenient, but too much time in there and your juice may become discolored. The juice will start out with a really bright color then change to brown or grey, something that is not really appealing to the eye.

The phytochemicals naturally found in many vegetables and fruits can effectively neutralize any carcinogens in your body. Incorporate as many of these foods as you can into your juice recipes.

TIP! You can just drink veggie juice if you are suffering from diabetes or high blood sugar levels; however, you should discuss this with your doctor to get specific instructions. Drinking fruit juice often causes blood sugar to spike.

Juice can help you add a spring back to your step. The dense nutrients in your glass of juiced veggies can ease your joint pain, improve memory and fight the effects of aging caused by excessive free radicals.

TIP! Watch how your own system reacts to the juice drinks that you create. Perhaps some of the juices you make will not be processed well by your body.

Extra Features

Juicers that feature a masticating option are your best bet. This type of juicer has extra features, such as grinding, pureeing, and milling. They can also help you to make wonderful desserts and smoothies. These extra features can make juicing more fun.

It’s not hard to become an expert juicer. These tips and hints can help you attain your objectives for juicing. Follow it to enjoy all the healthy benefits that regular juicing has to offer you and your family.

TIP! After juicing, consume your creation right away! Once the juice has been made, it begins losing nutrients. Vital nutrients diminish shortly after juicing.
